On the 28th February 2018, the EXCEPT UK country team led by Olena Nizalova delivered an invited talk at the International Labour Office Headquarters in Geneva. The talk was chaired by Sukti Dasgupta, Chief of the ILO’s Employment and Labour Market Policies Branch. This talk summarised three of the EXCEPT project papers on the long-term consequences of early-career labor market shocks for health and wellbeing:

(i) “The effect of an early-career involuntary job loss on later life health in Europe” (Vossemer, Gebel, Nizalova and Nikolaieva, published in Advances in Life Course Research, 2018)

(ii) “Long-run effects of severe economic recessions on male BMI trajectories and health behaviors” (Nizalova and Norton, working paper)

(iii) “Does past unemployment experience explain the transition happiness gap?” (Norton, Nizalova and Murtazashvili, working paper).

Niall O'Higgins, a Senior Research Specialist in the ILO’s Employment and Labour Market Policies Branch, discussed the results and their relevance for the ILO’s work. The audience included more than 40 ILO researchers and specialists whose current work or wider research interests include youth unemployment and youth employment policy.
